Addictions are a common factor of everyday life. Commonly known addictions include drug, alcohol, or gambling addictions. However, it is important to realize that more common obsessions (such as shopping, work, emails, ebay or other internet use, or merely obsessive patterns of thought) can also be faithfully labeled as addictions, and equally debilitating to the person caught within them. Sometimes addictive personalities will move on to another type of addiction, once their immediate environment or personal situation changes.

Whatever the addiction, addicts can be motivated by many factors. Obsessive personality disorders, procrastination, fear, or low self-confidence are several causes. Fortunately, there are strategies that can be used to break free of an addiction.

First, identify if you suffer from an addiction. See if you say yes to any of the following statements:

• I regularly take part in an activity which negatively affects my work, social life, or close relationships.

• I find it difficult to lead a balanced life. I often neglect fundamentals such as diet, sleep, exercise or other necessities.

• I do an activity which I logically wish to stop, however often cannot.

There are many strategies to overcome an addiction if you suffer from them. Read the next page, overcoming addictions, or the specific guide to your particular affliction. It is important to have ongoing and deeper support than is available in one website to finally break free of an addiction, so order one of the books suggested by fellow sufferers, and book in to see a psychiatrist or psychologist, and break free.
